Beta-glucans are high molecular weight, soluble fibres naturally found in the cell walls of grains, bacteria and fungi. Unlike most dietary fibres, beta-glucans are not absorbed in the small intestine — instead they are metabolised (fermented) predominantly into short-chain fatty acids in the large intestine by the bacteria located there. These short-chain fatty acids serve as an important energy supplier for the intestinal mucosa cells.
